Meet our performers

"Soprano Catherine Affleck showed wonderful interpretive skills, with beautiful colouring and subtlety. She was the first singer I heard that I thought was already an artist; to have the technique to allow the artistry to be forefront." Helene Kaplan, Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.

This past season, Miss Affleck sang the title role in Tchaikovsky's Iolanta with the Yale Opera studio where she has just completed an Artist Diploma. While at Yale, Miss Affleck has sung the roles of Fiordiligi (Cosí fan tutte) and Female Chorus (The Rape of Lucretia). Partial roles at Yale include Adina (L'Elisir d'amore), Mimí (La Bohême) and Mabel (The Pirates of Penzance). Miss Affleck was a featured soloist with Opera Theatre Connecticut where they recently travelled to Florida to perform in the Sanibel Music Festival. Miss Affleck was also a featured performer at the Opera America conference where she performed scenes from the newly Canadian Commissioned Opera, Oksana G. In June she will perform in several concerts with OTC in Bermuda.

Entering his second season as a resident artist with the Canadian Opera Company, Mr. McPhail will be heard on the mainstage as Schaunard in La Boheme, Silvano in Un Ballo in Maschera, Guglielmo in Cosi fan Tutte and will cover the roles of Ned Keene in Peter Grimes and Duke of Nottingham in Roberto Devereux. While completing his Masters of Music at the Yale Opera Studio under the tutelage of American bass Richard Cross, he sang Masetto in Don Giovanni, Guglielmo in Cosi fan Tutte, Postman in The Scarf, Tarquinius in The Rape of Lucretia and was heard as Nick Shadow in The Rake's Progress as a fellow at Marilyn Horne's Music Academy of the West. Other roles include Marcello in La Boheme, Falke and Frank in Die Fledermaus, Il Conte in Le Nozze di Figaro, Mercutio in Romeo et Juliette, Ford in Falstaff, Escamillo in Carmen and the title roles in Gianni Schicchi and Don Giovanni. Mr. McPhail has received awards from The George London Foundation, The Gerda Lissner Foundation, The Marilyn Horne Song Competition, The Manitoba Arts Council and The New England Regional finals of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
